Pictures of things that happen in or around the city and its people.
Meet my new project.
Meet my new photographic project, or in reality my first one ever. Though not the picture itself, its just a random snap shot taken today as i hashed out the idea in order to attempt to show it to all of you.
Lately I've began to feel uninspired and more importantly unfocused with my work. I've reached a certain point where I feel comfortable enough with what I'm doing that I can expand to a certain more ambitious project one with planning and a goal. And so with that in mind I have chosen Roosevelt Avenue and its immediate surroundings to do so.
The goal of the project is simply put to over the course of a year explore the unique nature of this one particular street and its people as it traverses over four neighborhoods and countless amounts of ethnic groups.
For it I want to spend at least one day a week on the street though as of now I'm aiming for about three days a week, alternating between different hours of the day.
The pictures themselves will be my usual fair in many ways but I plan to use every tool available to me. One particular goal I want to work on but make no promises about is being able to convince people to allow me to photograph them in a more natural setting to them.
I want to get to know the people and would love to be allowed into their lives on some level, photographing them at home or work.
Now this to me seems hard but i have an idea for this. I want to create a portfolio to carry around and print business card. It also means being always rather presentable, and as none threatening as possible. I however make no promises on this end as well it also takes me working up the courage to actually do it.
I'm not sure what I will do with all the pictures when done, I'm considering maybe publish a self made book, limiting it to a small number of copies and selling or just flat out giving them away.
I realize the scope of this project is rather grand, and for someone as myself who has no real formal training it might be a bit much but I feel as if i have to at least try. I'm currently working on a sort of attack plan for the whole project, figuring out where I want to start and how i want to do everything. I know for example that I need a negative scanner to make the price of using color film more bearable, and other such things like that.
So far I know at first I'm going to focus on the Jackson heights area of the street as I'm comfortable with it, having grown up around it and then slowly work my way out from there.
And I plan to be organized to the maximum amount. I plan to keep detailed notebooks of where I've been and maps in order to know whats been done and taken, along with notes to help me learn from mistakes. I really want this to work.
So that's the plan guys...
